Services for lawyers and judicial officers

Our staff are available to assist you with a range of information services. We can:

  • Assist with identifying and locating both primary and secondary legal resources.
  • Provide training on the use of legal databases and help develop an appropriate search strategy which is both efficient and effective.
  • Provide general assistance with your legal research queries, noting that we are not a legal research service.
  • Provide a range of current awareness services to ensure you are kept up to date with the latest developments.
  • Provide a virtual reference service 5 days per week between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm (Monday to Friday)

Inter Library Loans (Document Delivery)

If the item you require is not held within our collections, we can arrange to obtain it through document delivery services from another library. The minimum charge for this service is $19.70 for up to 25 consecutive pages. Any additional pages copied are charged at $4.60 per 25 pages or part thereof.  The response time for standard requests is 4 days.

If a rush request is required (within 24 hours), the cost of this service is $ 39.30 for up to 25 consecutive pages and $4.60 per 25 pages or part thereof.

The library will forward an invoice to practitioners or law firms.  Payment may be made in person or by phone using a credit card.

Photocopying and printing

Photocopying and printing facilities are available at the rate of 35 cents per page for black and white copies, or 55 cents per page for colour copies. Scanning a document to a usb is free of charge. Immediate payment may be made, or alternatively, an invoice will be generated for  later payment by credit card.

Electronic access

Members can access all electronic holdings via PCs located within the libraries. Departmental staff can access electronic subscriptions via their desktop. Contact the library for information relating to electronic book access.

WiFi access

WiFi is available to legal practitioners within the building to assist with access to information.  Access can be arranged by visiting the reception desk within the Civil Building.

Meeting rooms

Both the Andrew Inglis Clark Law Library and the Launceston Law Library have meeting rooms available for members to use. Please contact the respective libraries to reserve your booking.

Services for members of the public

Members of the public including those representing themselves in court are welcome to use the collection in Hobart and Launceston by appointment.

The D M Chambers Library, Judges Library and the North West Law Library are not available for members of the public.

Loans

Items are not available for loan to members of the public.

Photocopying and Printing

Photocopying and printing facilities are available at the rate of 35 cents per page (black and white) or you may scan to a usb for free. Immediate payment by credit card is required per visit.

Research assistance

Library staff can provide limited legal research assistance to members of the public. Staff cannot provide legal advice.

Library staff can:

  • Locate law related materials within the collection
  • Provide directions to other organisations who may be able to help.

Internet access

There are no PCs for members of the public to use. Library staff may assist with searches on your behalf. LibrariesTasmania provides free internet access to the public.

WiFi

WiFi is not available to members of the public.
